Alberta-owned. Safety-driven. Client-focused — delivering specialized freight with the reliability your operations depend on.
Strategic Transportation Ltd. is an Alberta-based carrier specializing in oilfield, industrial, and cross-border freight. We serve energy companies, construction firms, manufacturers, and industrial contractors across Western Canada and into the United States.
Our tagline — Large enough to serve you, small enough to care — reflects our operational philosophy. We have the capacity and certifications for complex freight challenges, with the responsiveness and personal accountability that only a focused team can provide.
Every client has direct access to dispatch and management. Every driver operates under a documented Journey Management Plan. Every load is handled with the care and compliance it deserves.
"To exceed expectations and prevent losses by providing innovative, safe, and environmentally responsible transportation solutions in all aspects of our business."
— STL HSE Policy Statement
Every STL employee and contractor operates with a goal zero mindset — no harm to people, environment, assets, or our reputation. This is not aspirational. It is operational standard.
Driven by a commitment to operational excellence and the belief that great logistics is built on trust, experience, and accountability.
Since 2013
Steve Fotheringham is the founder, owner, and Managing Director of Strategic Transportation Ltd., having established the company in 2013 with a clear mandate: deliver specialized freight solutions that clients in the oil and gas, industrial, and construction sectors can genuinely depend on.
With over a decade at the helm of STL, Steve has built the company from the ground up — growing a dedicated team of dispatch professionals, drivers, and support staff who share his commitment to getting every load where it needs to go, safely and on time. His hands-on approach to leadership means clients have real access to decision-makers, not call centres.
Steve's background in Western Canadian transportation gives STL a practical, field-tested edge. He understands the demands of oilfield logistics — tight timelines, remote sites, regulatory complexity, and the high cost of delays. That knowledge shapes every policy, process, and partnership at STL.
Together with his growing team, Steve brings the right combination of experience, dedication, and regional expertise to serve your transportation and logistics needs well into the future. Whether it's a same-day hotshot to a SAGD site or a complex cross-border project haul, STL's leadership is personally invested in the outcome.
Our HSE culture is built on five foundational pillars that guide how we work every day.
All employees and contractors receive HSE and safe practices training needed for their role. We track competency, not just course completion.
We meet or exceed all applicable laws, regulations, and policies — from Alberta OHS legislation to CBSA customs requirements.
Committed to protecting Alberta's environment in all operational areas, reducing resource use, and recovering usable products where possible.
Open communication with government, regulatory agents, Indigenous communities, and the public on all HSE matters affecting our operations.
Annual HSE program reviews, performance targets, and a culture that rewards identification of problems — not their concealment. Stop Work Authority is encouraged and protected.
All certifications required by Alberta's oil and gas, industrial, and transportation sectors — standard on every STL dispatch.

Strategic Transportation Ltd. operates under the National Safety Code — the federal/provincial framework governing commercial vehicle operators across Canada. Compliance with NSC standards is not optional; it is the foundation of our operating licence.
Our Safety Fitness Certificate is maintained in good standing with Alberta Transportation. Drivers comply with Commercial Vehicle Hours of Service Regulations, and all vehicles undergo mandatory pre-trip inspections per NSC Standard 13.
